Position Overview

Based in Lillooet, BC, Xwísten is seeking a strategic and dynamic leader for the role of Director of Lands and Resources. Reporting to the Administrator, the Director will oversee the protection and effective stewardship of Xwísten’s territory, ensuring the preservation of environmental habitats, promoting sustainable land and resource use, and safeguarding food security. This role will collaborate with community leaders, government bodies, private companies, and the broader community to develop and implement responsible land use strategies that align with Xwísten’s values and goals. The Director will lead a diverse team of functional managers, skilled technicians, and specialists in various fields related to land and resource management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee resource development referrals by tracking, monitoring, and ensuring meaningful consultation and accommodation of Xwísten’s interests. This includes upholding Indigenous Title and Rights in all land and resource use within Xwísten’s territory.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for land use and resource management, providing regular updates to the Chief & Council on key issues and collaborating on strategic land use decisions.
  • Lead, coordinate, and mentor the lands and resources team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment while building capacity within the department.
  • Oversee all resource development activities, manage land allocation for various uses, develop GIS mapping initiatives, manage budgets and project deadlines, and ensure effective document management.
  • Collaborate with key leaders on land use planning, represent Xwísten in resource agreement negotiations, engage with the community to ensure support for land management strategies, and participate in policy reviews.
  • Oversee the protection of cultural sites and work with community Elders to incorporate traditional practices into modern land use strategies.
  • Oversee the provision of services pertaining to cultural, technical services, heritage, wildlife, and archaeology to proponents, including government bodies, looking to operate in Xwísten territory.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree in natural resource management, finance, governance, or a related field, or have equivalent training and experience, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in lands and resource management within First Nations, including in leadership roles. A strong understanding of Indigenous Title and Rights and relevant environmental legislation is essential, along with financial acumen and experience managing budgets. Excellent leadership skills are crucial for motivating, delegating, and aligning team activities. High emotional intelligence, humility, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively at all levels are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database platforms, along with the ability to write proposals and apply for grants, is required. The physical ability to work in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain, and a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license are essential.

Xwísten offers a competitive base salary of $105,000 to $123,000 annually, commensurate with skills and experience, and extended health benefits, medical insurance, and a pension plan.
